Pain Perspectives in Sickle-Cell Anemia: From Bench to Management in Children and Adults and the Emergency Department Experience

Patients with sickle-cell anemia often experience both chronic pain and severe painful episodes. This APS symposium will review current research on the biology and mechanisms of pain in animal models of sickle-cell anemia and present research that addresses pain in children and adults and ways to manage their pain. Efforts to improve emergency department analgesic management through a research project and learning collaborative also will be discussed. The moderator of this symposium is Paula Tanabe, PhD RN. Dr. Tanabe is a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Institute for Healthcare Studies at the Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine. Presenters include: Kalpna Gupta, PhD; Carlton Dampier, MD; Wally Smith, MD. The symposium is a part of the American Pain Society, 28th Annual Scientific Meeting being held May 7 - 9, 2009 at the San Diego Convention Center, San Diego, California.
